Anachronistic

After watching the 50s cartoons posted by Marzipan on My 50s Year, it occurred to me that I was always drawn to the things much older than myself. I grew up in the late eighties and early nineties, but I was far more interested in cultures of the past. As a child, it was the 50s. As a teenager, it was the 60s and 70s (particularly the music of that time, which I was raised listening to). And now, as a young woman, I find myself drawn again to the 50s (as well as to the 80s).

There are a number of things my family did when I was a child that were characteristic of the 50s more than of the 90s. My mother always made the biscuit-cutout donuts, something that Atomic (of Atomic Living) mentioned being of the 50s. She was a stay at home mother, as well, while many of my friends' mothers worked (my mother did occasionally work part-time, and she went back to work full-time when I, the youngest, started school). And, of course, I was under the impression that everyone was raised this way, especially since Walter was raised similarly as well. It wasn't even that we had old parents. He, the oldest, was born when his parents were 25. I was born when my mother was nearly 24 and my father was 29 (my sister was born when my mother was 19 and my father was 25). We were born to fairly young parents, so why were we still living in decades past?

I think a lot of it comes from the fact that both of our families were living at or slightly below the poverty line. We couldn't afford lots of modern technologies or other things of the sort. And I believe that that is where a lot of my love for past generations comes from.

That is not to say that I don't love today, as well. Video games are one of Walter's and my favorite things. I see the Time Warp Wives and other similar people, and while part of me would love to live like that, I would miss too much of today, as well. That said, I downloaded lots of Frank Sinatra and Doris Day yesterday afternoon.

Today, I vacuumed the floors and am doing laundry. I still need to clean the bathrooms, but other than that, the day is nearly done. Tomorrow, before my guest arrives, I must make some lemon cupcakes, but he is not due until the evening, so there will be plenty of time. I also realized this morning that I will need my property tax receipt to get my car inspected and licensed next week, but I have no idea where any of our tax papers are. I am sure I shoved them away into a closet when we moved and forgot all about them. So, sometime before the end of the week, I will need to locate them.
